Why you Need Medical Gap Cover

Why you Need Medical Gap Cover

Medical care is incredibly expensive. Sadly; most people do not realize just how expensive it is until it is far too late. A lot of people seem to think that medical aid will cover all their expenses. However; quite often they are greeted with a rather large bill. This is obviously not the type of thing you want to be dealing with if you are sick. Thankfully; medical gap cover is there to help you out. Let me explain what it is all about.

Medical gap cover, as the name suggests, is a type of insurance that has been designed to ‘plug the gap’ that medical aid will not cover. This means that you are not going to be greeted with a rather expensive bill that you are unable to pay. The medical gap insurance will step right in and cover it for you. This means that you will able to focus on the most important thing to you; your recovery!

When you have medical gap coverage you will not have to worry about any expensive bills. If you are greeted with a medical bill then you can turn it over to the company that provides you with medical gap cover. They will then pay it for you.
Many medical aids give you the impression that you have enough cover. We often see medical aids claim to pay 300% of the medical expenses. This seems great right? The problem is the don’t always mention that the specialist can charge as much as 500% of medical aid rates. This means that the extra 200% will not be covered by the medical scheme. Gap cover will help settle the surplus on your behalf.

Just like every other form of insurance out there; medical gap cover will only provide you with coverage up to a certain amount. It is therefore wise to choose carefully here. You obviously do not want to choose an insurance rate that is so low that you will hardly be able to cover anything with it. Thankfully; medical aid should just about cover most medical procedures and only the most expensive will need to be covered by medical gap cover.

It is worth noting that you may be asked to undergo a medical before you are given medical gap cover. It is unlikely that this will be a full medical at a doctor’s surgery. Instead it is likely that you will be asked to fill in a short form in order to share details of your medical history. This is obviously important as the insurance company will not wish to pay out constantly to those who are always ill or have an illness which may mean they require a lot more in the way of medical treatment. It is also likely that the insurance company will base the cost of the coverage on your age. The younger you are, the more likely it is that you are going to end up with a cheaper premium to pay.

Remember; when you are shopping around for gap cover it is absolutely vital that you take the time to determine the right medical gap cover policy for your needs. Plenty of insurance companies out there will offer some sort of coverage. This means you are going to need to research to make sure you are covered for the right amount, and of course are paying a monthly premium for the policy that you are actually happy with!

The good news is most gap cover policies are very affordable. It costs a fraction of your medical aid. You can usually cover an entire family for a couple hundred Rand. Gap cover can help you sleep better at night.
